Saranda (also known as Sarandë) is an absolute gem on the Albanian Riviera, down in the south of the country, and it’s quickly becoming one of Albania’s hottest destinations – for all the right reasons. Think: stunning coastal views, awesome places to eat and drink, a lively nightlife, and of course, that dreamy Mediterranean climate. It’s got this amazing waterfront promenade where you can just relax and taste everything from traditional Albanian dishes to international favorites. Now, imagine yourself strolling down one of Albania’s most beautiful seaside promenades, dotted with lively bars and top-notch seafood restaurants just begging you to take a seat and soak up the view… like Haxhi, one of our personal faves in southern Albania (we’ll tell you more about it later!).
What really sets Sarandë apart is its super chill vibe, especially compared to some of the busier spots around Europe. Sure, it can get a little busy during the summer, but if you’re after a more relaxed experience, spring or autumn is perfect – it’s quieter, and the weather is still on point. And it doesn’t stop there, Saranda makes for an ideal base if you want to explore places like Lekursi Castle, the ancient ruins of Butrint, or the stunning Blue Eye spring. Whether it’s day or night, Saranda has this unique charm that you just have to experience for yourself.
In this blog, we’ll dive into everything – from where to stay, what to do, the nightlife, fun spots nearby, and of course, we’ll show you the gorgeous beaches Saranda is famous for. Let’s get started!

It’s the perfect balance of city energy and laid-back beach access, with tons of great restaurants, bars, and the ferry port right nearby. You’ll find plenty of stunning hotels here, with sea views or even private beaches. If you’re after something more low-key, the southern coastline is a great option. It has lovely resorts and hotels right on the beach, often with pools, and you’re still just a quick trip away from the buzz of the city center.

Sarandë has plenty to offer! Start with a visit to Lekursi Castle for amazing views of the city, Ksamil, and even Corfu — especially at sunset. If you’re in the mood for a laid-back vibe, take a stroll down the Hasan Tahsini Boulevard, where you can enjoy the seaside, grab a coffee, and soak up the local atmosphere.
For a bit of culture, check out the Forty Saints Monastery or wander through the Ancient Synagogue Complex right in the city center. Just 22 km away, you’ll find the stunning Blue Eye, a crystal-clear spring that’s picture-perfect and incredibly refreshing. History buffs should also make time for Butrint National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site packed with ancient ruins and beautiful landscapes… Let’s dive into every item in full detail!
Looking to spice up your Instagram feed or catch an unforgettable sunset? Lekursi Castle in Saranda should definitely make it onto your travel bucket list! Sitting proudly on top of Lekursi Hill, this place not only offers a dose of history but also mind-blowing views of Saranda, Ksamil and even Corfu. The castle itself is pretty cool too – think a square fortress with two round towers, perfectly positioned for those panoramic views. And the drive up? Just as beautiful, with scenic spots all the way. If you want to take a break, Natyra Restaurant is a great place to relax and soak in even more of those stunning landscapes. And let’s be honest – the sunsets from here are the real showstoppers!
Once you’re inside Lekursi Castle, it’s not just the history that stands out. There’s a restaurant with a huge outdoor terrace that’s perfect for catching the sunset over dinner. In the summer, the place is buzzing with both locals and tourists, enjoying good food, drinks, and a lively atmosphere. (it’s an Instagram/TikTok hotspot for a reason!) If you’re lucky, you might even catch a performance of traditional Albanian folk music and dance, giving you a taste of the local culture.
Around the castle, you can explore the ruins of the old village of Lëkurës, which adds a touch of mystery to your visit. You’ll also notice some old artillery from the 20th century at the entrance, and there are a few Cold War-era bunkers dotted around the hill, reminding you of Albania’s unique history. Lekursi Castle is definitely worth a visit!
Oh, and if you love a good hike, you can reach the castle on foot from the center of Saranda in about 90 minutes! Pro tip: Book the romantic “Lekursi Castle Sunset Tour“, it starts at just €19 per person!
If you’re anywhere near Sarande, make sure to visit the mesmerizing Blue Eye, known locally as “Syri i Kaltër.” Just 22 kilometers away, this natural wonder is an absolute must-see when you’re in Albania. The name says it all, it really does look like a giant, bright blue human eye! The center is a deep, vibrant blue, surrounded by striking greens and turquoise, making it one of those places that’ll have you snapping photos every few seconds.
Here’s the cool part: the Blue Eye pumps out a whopping 18,400 liters of water per second, and the temperature stays a crisp 10°C year-round. Talk about refreshing! The spring also feeds into the Bistricë River, and while it’s believed to be over 50 meters deep, no one really knows for sure – adding a bit of mystery to this already magical spot. With so many natural springs around the world, Albania’s Blue Eye truly stands out. Want to learn more about this hidden gem? Dive deeper with our full article on the Blue Eye!
If you’re staying in Sarande, Butrint National Park is one of those places you absolutely have to check out. It’s just a short 30-minute drive away, making it super easy to reach. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage site, so you know it’s going to be special, right? Visiting Butrint is like stepping into a time machine, where you can wander through ancient ruins while being surrounded by beautiful greenery and tranquil wetlands. The park spans 29 square kilometers and is the perfect mix of history and nature. As you explore, you’ll literally be walking through centuries of history… wow!
The star of the show is the ancient city of Butrint, with its impressive monuments blending seamlessly into the landscape. You’ll find everything from grand castles and old theatres to detailed Roman villas. One highlight you won’t want to miss is the Triconch Palace, a gorgeous Roman villa that’s packed with stories from the past. But there’s so much more to see, and every step feels like it’s worth it! Another thing we love about Butrint is how shady and cool it is, making it perfect for a relaxing stroll – even on hotter days.
The paths are easygoing, so visitors of all ages can enjoy the experience. And if you’re lucky, you might even catch sight of some turtles hanging out in the ponds (we did!). Parking is free, but it can get a bit busy during peak times, so just keep that in mind. Butrint National Park is a definite must-visit while you’re in Sarande. Don’t miss out!
One of the best ways to start your time in Saranda is with a stroll down Hasan Tahsini Boulevard. This beautiful seaside promenade stretches along the bay, offering a relaxed coastal vibe with easy beach access and plenty of bustling cafés where you can grab a drink or snack. In the summer, the boulevard comes alive with markets, just like you see in countries like Italy, Spain or Croatia very often. As the evening sets in, you’ll notice locals taking part in Xhiro, a charming Albanian tradition where everyone heads out for a walk and meets friends for coffee or a drink. And by the way, it’s not something you just see in Sarandë, during your stay in Albania you will see this every night in many places.
Along Hasan Tahsini Boulevard, you’ll pass some interesting historical spots. Keep an eye out for ancient remains of the city gate from Onhezmus, right on the beach. And if you’re into maritime adventures, head to the Saranda Marina, where you can watch local fishermen bring in their daily catch or hop on a boat to explore more of the Albanian Riviera. For a perfect pit stop, check out Bar & Restaurant Limani, uniquely positioned on the water, offering 360° views of the sea and promenade. It’s a popular spot for good reason – there’s in our eyes no better place to enjoy the view with a drink in hand!
Gjirokastër, located one hour from Saranda, is a charming mountain town that feels like a step back in time, with its old stone houses and cobbled streets giving it a unique, historic vibe. It’s definitely one of Albania’s top highlights and for good reason! From its impressive Ottoman-style houses to the stunning castle and cozy little restaurants serving up delicious traditional food, Gjirokastër is a peaceful escape into Albania’s rich history that you won’t want to miss. As you wander through the winding streets, you’ll stumble across reminders of its storied past at every corner. Known as the “City of a Thousand Steps,” this UNESCO World Heritage site is home to a massive castle perched on the hill, offering amazing views over the Drinos Valley. The town’s iconic white stone houses and vibrant Albanian carpets add to its old-world charm.
If you’re a history buff, don’t miss the Zekate and Skenduli houses for a peek into life centuries ago. Gjirokastër’s beautifully preserved Ottoman architecture is one of the key reasons for its UNESCO status. While parts of the old town have been restored with trendy shops and restaurants, a short walk will take you to quieter streets where the historic buildings remain untouched. At the highest point in town, you’ll find the 12th-century castle. The views from up here are breathtaking, especially if you visit at sunset. Inside, you can explore a military museum and learn more about the region’s history (and even spot an old American plane with a mysterious backstory!).
The clock tower, standing proudly on the hill, is the castle’s most striking feature, and while the castle itself might not be the most action-packed, the view alone makes it well worth a visit – especially if you’re into Gjirokastër’s fascinating history. For more tips and must-knows before visiting, If you’d like to join a guided tour through Gjirokaster and see all the key attractions, you can book a three-hour tour for just €14.99 per person.
Saranda’s Monastery of 40 Saints is one of the city’s most historically important sites, but what really steals the show is the breathtaking view over Saranda, Corfu, and Ksamil! Built in the 6th century, this monastery gave Saranda its name “forty” in Greek, in honor of forty Roman martyrs.
Though it was damaged during WWII, the remaining ruins are definitely worth visiting, especially for the panoramic views of the bay and mountains. Situated on a hill about 3 kilometers from town, it’s a 45-minute uphill walk or a short ride. Bonus tip: for the best photos, visit at sunrise or sunset. Your Instagram will thank you!
Right in the heart of Saranda, near the City Hall, lies the ruins of the Ancient Synagogue Complex. This site dates back to the 5th century and was once a key part of a thriving Jewish community. Initially built as a synagogue, it was later transformed into a Christian basilica after an earthquake in the 6th century. As you explore the site, you’ll discover beautiful mosaic floors featuring Jewish symbols like a menorah, ram’s horn and citrus fruit.
These mosaics, along with the remains of religious structures, a school and a community center, offer a unique glimpse into the past. Archaeologists have uncovered more ruins over time, and further excavations are planned as more of the complex remains buried under modern buildings. Easily reachable by foot, the site is located between Rruga Skënderbeu and Rruga Onhezmi, and nearby buses stop right by the ruins. For more on the history, visit the Museum of Archaeology, where another mosaic floor is displayed along with additional information. To be fair, it’s not the most spectacular piece of history you’ll find in Albania, but the Ancient Synagogue Complex is still worth a quick visit!
Driving through Albania? A downside to Sarandë is the limited parking, but we’ve got you covered! Hotel Sunrays, just a stone’s throw from the center, offers free parking right under the hotel – super convenient! Plus, it’s affordable and we’ve stayed there ourselves, so we can vouch for it!

We’ve already mentioned Ksamil earlier in this article, so let’s jump right into it: Ksamil should be right at the top of your list! Just 50 km from Sarande, you’ll find the laid-back coastal town of Himarë – a hidden gem that’s perfect if you’re looking to escape the more crowded tourist spots. Once a quiet fishing village, it still holds on to its relaxed vibe, even though more people are discovering its beauty. What can you expect? Picture sandy beaches, crystal-clear turquoise waters and secluded little coves that are perfect for unwinding.
One of the highlights? Gjipe Beach, which is often called one of Albania’s best. And as you explore, you’ll notice a cool mix of Greek and Albanian influences in the food, architecture, and the super-friendly locals. Don’t miss a visit to Himara Castle for a dose of history, wander through quaint old villages, and treat yourself to some fresh seafood right by the shore. With stunning views and a chill atmosphere, Himarë is the perfect spot to recharge while heading up north in Albania.
Get ready to fall in love with Dhërmi! Just 70 km from Sarandë, it’s one of Albania’s coastal treasures, often compared to Santorini with its beautiful white houses perched on the hills. Dhërmi has it all: stunning nature, lively culture and a nightlife that really knows how to turn up the volume. Think a 2 km stretch of beach, an old town full of charm, and summer nights filled with music and dancing. And did we already mention the Kala Festival? It brings in thousands of party-goers every year!
Dhërmi is like two places in one. Down by the coast, you’ve got bustling beaches, a lively promenade with hotels, restaurants, and beach clubs. The crystal-clear waters and white pebble beaches are perfect if you’re into sunbathing or water sports. But if you head up the hill, there’s even more to explore. Beaches like Drymades and Jali are summer hot spots, especially for young people, with international DJs keeping the vibe going all season long. Dhërmi is definitely one of the trendiest places in Albania!
If you’re into adventure, Palasë might be your new favorite hangout. It’s a hotspot for thrill-seekers, especially if you love air sports or mountain climbing. And if luxury is more your thing, the Green Coast Resort has got you covered with everything from swanky hotels to private villas. Palase has Albania’s only Blue Flag beach… Yep, it’s as dreamy as it sounds! The moment you pop out of the Llogara Pass (or tunnel), Palasë is the first village to greet you on the stunning Albanian Riviera, which stretches a whopping 450 km of coastline.
The views here are absolutely mind-blowing – imagine soaring mountains dropping into the sparkling sea. Palasë is quickly climbing the ranks as one of Albania’s top vacation spots, with breathtaking scenery, its beautiful beach and some seriously top-tier places to stay. It’s located just 70 km north of Saranda, making it super easy to do a two-in-one trip if you’re flying into Tirana. Vlora is one of those must-visit places in Albania, you simply can’t skip it! This colorful coastal city is bursting with energy, from its bright buildings to its lively streets. Take a stroll through the old town, grab some delicious local bites at a cozy café, and wander along the palm-lined promenade filled with shops and cafés. It’s the perfect spot to relax and take in the vibe. If you’re up for a bit of history, swing by the Independence Monument or check out the Kaninë Castle for a glimpse into Vlorë’s fascinating past.
Love nature? You’re in for a treat! The nearby Karaburun Peninsula and Sazan Island offer amazing landscapes and sea life that’ll make you fall in love with Albania all over again. Vlorë’s got a little bit of everything: gorgeous beaches, rich history, and plenty of beauty to go around. The mix of pastel-colored buildings and remnants of communist-era bunkers makes for a unique and charming atmosphere. The 115-km drive to Vlorë is absolutely worth it, especially if you’re planning to combine it with the spots we mentioned earlier.
Just a 20 minute walk from Saranda’s center, Plazhi Era is a tucked-away beach in the Kodra district that’s perfect for a relaxing day by the sea. Plazhi Era stretches around 300 meters, with plenty of space to find your spot, though it does get packed during the busy season, so getting there early is a smart move. Keep in mind, the beach is pebbly, so maybe skip the barefoot stroll! There are a few cozy restaurants and cafes right on the beach, so grabbing a drink or snack is super easy.
Amenities are pretty basic – there’s bathroom access and dogs are welcome, but that’s about it. Parking is available for a small fee, so no worries about where to leave your car. The beach offers stunning views of the Ionian Sea and even Corfu in the distance, making it a picture-perfect place to unwind. And when you’re ready for some sightseeing, you’re not far from the lively Sarandë Promenade or the ancient ruins at Butrint. Good to know: Plazhi Era is not free (it’ll cost you €10 for two sunbeds and an umbrella).
Want to make a smart choice? Book Vila Era Beach! You’ll get free access to Plazhi Era, complete with sunbeds and a parasol. Oh, and did we mention? A delightful breakfast is included! We’ve been there ourselves, so we can vouch for it!
Pulëbardha Beach is a perfect little hideaway, just a 15-minute drive from Sarandë, right before you hit Ksamil. Set between rocky cliffs and lush greenery, this beach boasts some of the clearest water around. It’s easily one of the prettiest spots in the area, offering gorgeous views and a laid-back vibe. The water’s great for a swim, though the beach is pebbly – so maybe pack some water shoes!
The secluded feel of Pulëbardha Beach is part of its charm, and those cliffs? Absolute gold for photos. Seriously, it’s hard to capture how stunning this place is until you see it for yourself! You can get there by taking the bus that runs between Butrint and Sarandë, which drops you off on the main road. From there, it’s about a 20-minute walk to this beach. If you’re driving, heads up: the road down is a bit bumpy, but trust us, the view at the end makes it worth it!
Right between the lively promenade and the clear waters, Saranda’s public beach is where locals and travelers come to relax and soak up the sun. Now, let’s be real: Saranda Beach isn’t the most stunning beach you’ll find in Albania (it’s a bit pebbly, and yep, it gets busy). But what it lacks in picture-perfect sand, it more than makes up for with its prime location and chill atmosphere! It’s free, right in the heart of town and the view across the bay? Absolutely beautiful.
Stretching all the way from the ferry terminal to the end of the promenade, this beach is always alive with sunbeds, good vibes and plenty of bars/restaurants. The area’s divided into three main spots: the central Public Beach, the laid-back Koddra beaches to the west, and the ones along Rruga Butrinti to the east. And with cool hangouts like Jericho Cocktail Bar (we’ll dive into that soon) and our favorite restaurant, Haxhi (more on that later too), you’re never far from a great meal or a sunset cocktail. Fun fact: you can even take a dip off one of the small piers or explore the ancient ruins of Onhezmus right on the beach!
Mango Beach offers clear waters, sunbeds and a vibrant atmosphere with restaurants and beach bars. By day, you can enjoy relaxing by the shore, and by night, the venue transforms into an open-air club, also known as the Mango Beach Club. Hosting up to 2,500 people, Mango Beach is known for its late-evening music, ranging from international hits to house, dance and local Albanian beats… really cool!
However, families or those seeking a quieter beach experience may want to explore other options nearby. For €20, you can rent a set of beach chairs and an umbrella – it’s slightly more expensive than other Saranda beaches.
If you’re on the hunt for one of the coolest beaches near Sarandë, Monastery Beach is a must-see! Just a quick 30 minute drive south of the town along Rruga Butrinti toward Ksamil, and boom – you’re greeted by gorgeous white sands and crystal blue waters that honestly feel like you’ve walked straight into a Pirates of the Caribbean scene! The beach itself is a mix of grey pebbles, comfy sunbeds, and umbrellas, perfect for chilling. Tucked away in the rocks, there’s a cozy little restaurant serving up refreshing drinks, fresh seafood, and local bites.
And just above the beach, perched on the hills, is the Monastery of Saint George, which is where the beach gets its name. Head up there for some breathtaking views of the Ionian Sea and Monastery Beach, trust us, it’s totally worth it! You can get here by car or bus. If you’re on the bus from Sarandë to Butrint, just ask the driver to drop you off at Monastery Beach and it’s only a short walk from the main road. Easy peasy and definitely more accessible than some of the other beaches along the way!
Saranda is the go-to city in southern Albania and it gets busier every year as more people discover its coastal charm (especially at night). Most of the nightlife action happens along the beachfront promenade, but trust us, there are tons of other cool spots to check out for an epic summer night.
Saranda is packed with awesome bars, so a pub crawl is pretty much a must if you’re in town! Whether you’re into fancy cocktail lounges, laid-back pubs or dancing the night away in nightclubs like the Orange Lounge, there are plenty of ways to make your night unforgettable! Let’s dive into some of the best spots to enjoy the nightlife around here!
Looking for a place to chill or party in Saranda? The Orange Lounge Club is open 24/7 and has everything you need – coffee, cocktails, beer, even hookah. If you’re into nightlife, this is one of the few nightclubs in the area, so it’s a good spot to hit up.
The atmosphere is fun, the staff is super friendly, and yeah, there’s a lot of Albanian music, but that adds to the vibe! With live performances from local artists every night, the place is always full of energy. It’s worth a visit if you’re in town!
Hojza Lounge Terrace is hands down one of the best spots we found for evening drinks! This trendy rooftop cocktail bar is right on Saranda’s beachfront promenade, with an awesome view of the beach. The décor is super inviting and in the evening, there’s usually a DJ playing melodic or afro techno, which really sets the mood for a great night out. The cocktails were delicious, and the DJ was on fire – mixing like a pro.
The staff were all really friendly and we had some shisha too, though it would’ve been cool if there were more flavors to choose from. The bartenders are top-notch and the manager really knows how to make you feel welcome. It’s a great spot to chill with a drink, enjoy the sunset and soak up the atmosphere. Definitely worth a visit! Oh and by the way; the prices of cocktails are really reasonable for such a great place.
Hidden gem alert! Jungle Lounge in Saranda should definitely be on your must-visit list. It’s got everything you need for a fantastic time – a stunning rooftop view, amazing drinks and a welcoming vibe. The tropical-themed decor is absolutely gorgeous and really adds to the laid-back, yet vibrant atmosphere. Their cocktails are fantastic – not just tasty but crafted with precision and care.
The music is another highlight – perfect for setting the mood without overpowering the whole experience. Oh, and did we mention the sunset? It’s the perfect spot to catch those magical golden hour views over the water. Trust us, this is the place to be if you want to chill, have fun, and enjoy Saranda from the best rooftop in town!
We stumbled upon this cozy little bar overlooking the sea and ended up staying longer than we planned. The atmosphere was perfect – lively, but still chill. And the cocktails? Absolutely fantastic. We’re so glad we found this place on our first day because now we can come back, especially during Happy Hour!
The staff is super friendly and the vibe is cosmopolitan without being pretentious. If you’re in Saranda, do yourself a favor and drop by for a drink (or two!). Plus, the cocktails are super affordable – perfect for a budget-friendly night out!
Sarandë’s gastronomy and nightlife offer a mix of cozy, authentic experiences and vibrant atmospheres. While the promenade has plenty of great restaurants, some hidden gems are found just behind it – like our favorite, Haxhi. Known for its generous portions and warm service, Haxhi is a must-visit. For stunning seaside views, head to Restaurant La Petite, where the seafood mix and house wine are top-notch. If you’re after big portions and delicious grilled meats, Taverna Labëria offers great food at reasonable prices in a lively setting. Let’s dive into these top spots!
If you’re looking for a cozy, delicious meal in Saranda, Haxhi is hands down our favorite place. Tucked away just behind the main boulevard, this family-run restaurant is a hidden gem. It’s so popular in the summer that they even have benches outside for people waiting for a table… that says a lot, right? The food here is fantastic – authentic, fresh, and full of flavor. From the Greek salad to the lamb yogurt casserole and slow-roasted pork, everything is perfectly prepared.
The portions are super generous and the service is always warm and welcoming. Plus, at the end of your meal, they treat you to a free shot of homemade liquor and some fresh watermelon – such a nice touch! The owners speak great English and are always happy to share the story behind the restaurant, which makes it even more special. Oh, and let’s not forget about the wine – it’s just as amazing as the food! If you’re in Saranda, you’ve got to check out Haxhi. Just be ready for a bit of a wait during busy times, but trust us, it’s worth it! You can also make a reservation if you’d rather skip the line.
Restaurant La Petite is an awesome place with a terrace right by the sea – not many restaurants in Sarandë can’t beat that view! What about the service? On point, big shoutout to Constantine for making it such a great experience. While it’s not the spot to dive into traditional Albanian cuisine, it’s absolutely worth visiting for the location and vibe (we actually ended up coming back the second night because we loved it so much). The food came out quickly and we never had to ask for anything. The atmosphere and view at Restaurant La Petite are amazing, but the food was even better!
We tried the seafood mix with mussels and octopus, and everything was top-notch. Even the house wine was fantastic and at a fair price. Oh, and Constantine’s sister was super sweet, too! Also, important to know: you can come here for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. Prices are a bit higher than in other places around Sarandë, but honestly, it’s one of the best spots to eat in the area. We always recommend making a reservation before visiting Restaurant La Petite.
If you’re all about big portions, Taverna Labëria is the place to be! The prices are super reasonable, especially for the amount of food you get. The meats? Absolutely delicious – whether grilled or fried, they know how to do it right every time. Even when it’s not packed, the place still has a lively, fun vibe going on.
The waiter (the guy with glasses) was super enthusiastic and went through the menu like he was talking about his favorite dishes – so much detail, and you could tell he cared! Got gluten-free needs? No worries here, their meats don’t even go near flour. And to give you an idea of how generous the portions are: we had to take some home in boxes because we couldn’t finish everything – and all that for such a great price!
Well, not yet! As of now, Saranda doesn’t have its own airport, but there have been talks about it. Back in 2021, the Albanian government announced plans to build an airport in Saranda. They even opened up a competition for private investors to take on the project, but, unfortunately, no one seemed interested. They gave it another shot, even loosening up some of the requirements to make it more appealing – but still, no takers.
So, what does that mean for now? If you’re headed to Saranda, your best bet is to fly into Tirana (Albania’s main international airport) or hop over to Corfu, Greece, and take a short 35-minute ferry. Both options have lots of connections from European cities, making it relatively easy to get there. You could also consider flying into Athens or Ioannina in Greece, which have regular bus routes to Saranda.
There is also a new airport planned for Vlora, about 150 km from Saranda, but no official opening date yet. Long story short, Saranda is still waiting for its own airport, but until then, getting there is easier than you might think!
If you’re looking for a great map of Saranda, the one down below is a must-have for a smooth and enjoyable trip.
